Did you know?
Sam DiGiacinto has been making cheesesteak subs since he was eleven years old. His dad owned the famous Rex Sub House in Atlantic City, New Jersey, located at 16 N. Kentucky Ave. from 1946–1971. Sam says he thinks he has eaten more cheesesteaks than he has made, but he doubts it. Duplicating the cheesesteak in Springfield that his father served in Atlantic City wasn’t easy. Sam had to learn how to make Italian bread from scratch, and learn how to butcher and slice his own steaks. The rest came naturally. Sam thinks DiGiacinto’s has the best cheesesteak in the world, but he would like you to be the judge of that.
Ducktown
Sam’s Italian neighborhood in Atlantic City that derived its nickname from the early 1900s when ducks would leave their houses along the bay front and hang out on the corners of Georgia and Mississippi Avenue. The area is still referred to as Ducktown today.
The DiFabio
The other prominent Italian family living in Ducktown. They became related when Madeline DiFabio married Vincent DiGiacinto "back the alley."
The Barbera
The local fish market in Ducktown. Owner Bolt Barbera became a legend overnight when he beat Rackhead in a very publicized neighborhood gin rummy game.
The Danielli
Sam’s childhood friend Gigi Danielli was very popular in Ducktown one summer when he became the wiffle ball home run champion.
The Angeloni
Located on the corner of Georgia and Atlantic avenues in Ducktown. The corner, and the restaurant, were a hangout for guys with nicknames like Rick the Plumber, Tommy Floors and Johnny Dishes.
